About CJ South & Co

CJ South and Co is a mixed sheep and cropping enterprise across 4900 ha of owned and leased land near Wagin in Western Australia. Clayton South runs the business with his wife, Polly, four sons, farm manager and two staff.

The sheep enterprise represents 30% of the business with a self-replacing, non-mulesed Dohne/Merino ewe flock. The sheep enterprise began with a Merino base with Dohne rams introduced in the early 2000’s to move towards a plainer bodied animal with better reproductive performance while maintaining wool cut.

Ewes have been pregnancy scanned for multiples for over 25 years, with this being a critical tool for optimising sheep management and productivity. Ewe lambs have been joined at 6 to 7 months for the last 10 years, with a steady improvement in the results achieved. This year the operation will join 3500 adult ewes along with 1800 ewe lambs.

CJ South & Co have begun breeding rams for their own use over the last 3 years, with genetics sourced from leading maternal Merino studs Mumblebone, Moojepin and Anderson Rams. This decision was made to assist in getting adequate coverage over an increasing number of ewe lambs being joined.

Clayton and his team are focussed on making data-driven decisions within their sheep enterprise, with EID introduced over 7 years ago. An array of data, including ewe pregnancy scan and foetal age, weaning weights and dag scores, are recorded to inform selection and culling decisions.

CJ South & Co aspire to reach 90% survival across all lambs born. Overall lamb survival currently averages around 80%, which includes single-, twin- and triplet-born lambs.
